The Royal Championship Edit
When the monarch-to-be is in the year of their 18th birthday, the current monarch declares the year to be that of The Royal Championship. This is a year-long celebration and competition of the monarch's coming of age and to determine their spouse.
The ceremonies begin in with the new year celebration, and it marks an event known as "The Flocking", where tons of people come into cities to register for the competition. As per Alteirian tradition, anyone at all is allowed to enter the completion, provided they are biologically capable of producing children with the heir. Because of this, tons of people flock to try their hand.
As long as the histories go back, there has never been a non-noble winner of the Royal Championship, and the nobles work to keep it that way. The first competition is a writing one, where applicants must take a test on Alteirian histories. Nearly all peasants are eliminated by this test, as nobles like to keep their peasants illiterate. The few who make it past this step due to cheating or secretly being literate are often taken out in the next competition - jousting, where each applicant must supply their own horse and armor or be disqualified.
There are several more competitions, ceremonies, parties, and rites that must be followed to select a winner, and in the onset of winter - a winner is literally crowned and named as the future king/queen of Alteiria.
Birthday Celebration Edit
Each Monarch's birthday is celebrated with a 3-day long feast.
The nobility treat religion like they do their clothes. They strive to be fashionable, and will adapt and throw out outfits at the drop of a hat.
The peasants follow tradition, and strive to appease the same gods their family has for generations, stoically following age-old beliefs.
